#033-365 Breaking the Rule of Thirds

Again I am willing to be corrected if this isn't in fact breaking the Rule, but it must be close. This is another shot from yesterday's Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race, and this vessel is the eventual Line Honours winner Peter Harburg"s sloop "Black Jack".

Skippered by Mark Bradford, Black Jack covered the 308 nautical mile race in 22Hour, 7 Minutes and 18 Seconds, the sixth fastest time in the 61 year history of the race. The winner on corrected time looks likely to be Ray Roberts "Quantum Racing" but that is the nature of the game.

This shot was one of a series of three in which Black Jack coincidentally was the first vessel past my position on Woody Point. The three shots showed the crew setting the spinnaker for the first time since the race had started about 30 minutes before. I chose this shot because the spinnaker is fully set and the tanker in the background (Headed into Brisbane) made a good contrast for the shot without (IMHO) Impinging my intended ROT infringement. (Misdemeanor or Felony?)
I have a few more shots taken on the day which will find their way into themes as I get pushed for working theme shots or unless something really twisted occurs to me. Have a Great Easter All.

This does break the ROT. Nice sky and water colors though. For a better shot on these kinds of scenes, get closer to the subject (like the schooners). You can crop some of the water though in PE. Thanks for showing us so much of where you live.

Definately breaks the rule of thirds but the result is a super shot. Horizon dead center as is the sailing ship - if you drew a line through them you'd cut your photo into four quadrants. Good job! I hope you enjoyed your Easter too.

I'd say you did a great job ofrule breaking. Everything is along the middle line. Happy Easter

I thought it was you who said, "Rules are make to be broken." As a previous sailboat owner, I love this. Not racing, that was nerve-wracking.

Looks like you broke the rule since the boat is centered. Pretty shot!

I think it is breaking the rule, but it is still a phenomenal shot. All of those great shades of blue...the sky and water are lovely.

Beautiful shot--all those shades of blue really make the white sail pop out. Looks like a lovely day. Hope your Easter was great.

I believe you're right on the mark with this one Ron. I had to look it up myself and have yet to find the right shot. You did very well. Now I see why following the rule of thirds is much more appealing to the eye. Beautiful ship...next time, shoot it off to the right a bit ;) lol
