This is difficult as there are so many meritorious monuments that qualify, so as is my want, I thought that I would bring one in from left field, This is the Southern Cross aircraft Flown by one of Australias greatest Pioneer Aviators Sir Charles Kingsford Smith affectionately known as "Smithy"! The aircraft id housed under ideal conditions in a purpose built memorial at Brisbane Airport.He and his Co-Pilot Charles Ulm (Who did not know how to fly at that time) along with navigator Harry Lyon and wireless operator James Warner flew this plane from the United States to Australia, arriving at Brisbane's Eagle Farm (Current Airport) on 9 June 1928, compared to the small flight across the Altlantic, this was a real flight. He is a true Australian Icon along with Sir Don Bradman (The Miracle Cricketing Batsman) and Phar Lap (Actually born in New Zealand).

That's a long way to fly such a little plane! I bet they needed to stretch their legs a bit when they landed.
